My Artrium mural, “Art is a Hammer” is a tribute to the Russian Constructivist art style that is probably my biggest art and design influence, especially from the mid 90’s to early 2000’s. The mural includes a portrait of Vladimir Mayakovsky, a Russian poet, actor, and designer. He was a prominent figure in the Futurist movement and one of the signers of the Futurist manifesto. The art includes the phrase “art is not a mirror to reflect society but a hammer with which to shape it”, originally coined by Bertoit Brecht, but frequently used by Mayakovsky. I agree with the message of that phrase and the mural also features an update of the Obey Hammer art I made in the late 90’s.
