Description

One of the most famous public monuments in the world, Mount Rushmore, in Keystone, in the American state of South Dakota, gained a reinterpretation in the features and style of the Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra.
The original work, a sculpted rocky mound, in order to represent in gigantic dimensions the faces of four presidents of the United States, was the idea of the artist Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941). Mount Rushmore pays tribute to George Washington (1732-1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) and Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865).
In the version of Kobra, a 150 square meter mural that can be seen in Chelsea, New York, the portrayed are four gigantic characters from the world of the arts. 'Artists' Memorial' features Andy Warhol (1928-1987), Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), Keith Haring (1958-1990) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988).
"To refer to Mount Rushmore is to remember the values of these four American presidents, so deeply linked to the ideals of freedom, democracy, equality and peace", comments Kobra. “By putting in place four artists for whom I have great admiration, I borrow their memories, remembering the works of art that they did and that put the world so much to reflect on.”
